Skincare in Your 50s and 60s: A Gentle Routine for Mature Skin

After menopause, skin loses collagen quickly — about 30% in the first five years, according to dermatology research — and becomes thinner, drier and slower to heal. That changes the priorities: comfort and barrier strength come first, with actives used more gently. It is never too late to start; skin responds to good care at any age.

What changes in your 50s and 60s

  • Thinner, drier skin as oestrogen falls and oil glands slow down.
  • Loss of firmness: sagging along the jaw, neck and under the eyes.
  • Age spots on the face, hands and chest.
  • Easier bruising, slower healing and more sensitivity.
  • Rough or scaly spots that should be checked by a doctor (see below).

A gentle routine for mature skin

Morning: a cream or milk cleanser (or just water), vitamin C or niacinamide serum, a rich moisturiser, sunscreen SPF 30 to 50. Apply moisturiser and sunscreen to the neck, chest and backs of the hands too.

Night: gentle cleanser, a retinoid two to five nights a week as tolerated, then a rich cream with ceramides, glycerin or shea.

MAKE RETINOIDS COMFORTABLE

If retinoids sting, apply moisturiser first and the retinoid on top, or try a gentler form like retinal or bakuchiol. Steady, gentle use beats strong use you can't keep up.

Spots that need a doctor

Skin cancer risk rises with age. See a doctor for any spot that is new, changing, bleeding, crusting or not healing, and for rough, scaly patches on sun-exposed skin, which can be actinic keratoses. A yearly skin check is sensible from your 50s, especially if you have had a lot of sun.

In your 60s and beyond

Keep the same structure and lean further towards comfort: richer creams, lukewarm water, fragrance-free products and a humidifier in dry weather. Body skin needs moisturiser too, since dry, itchy skin is very common after 60.

TRACK IT, DON'T GUESS

Rosee scans your face on your iPhone and tracks texture, tone, hydration, glow, redness and dark circles from scan to scan, so you can see whether a routine is actually working instead of guessing from the mirror. The photo never leaves your phone. After seven scans it also estimates a Skin Vitality Age, rounded to whole years and never from a single selfie. Every feature is open for your first week, then it is a monthly or yearly subscription.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best skincare routine for women over 50?

A gentle cleanser, an antioxidant serum, a rich moisturiser and SPF 30–50 in the morning, and a retinoid plus a ceramide cream at night, used as often as your skin tolerates.

Is it too late to start retinol at 50 or 60?

No. Studies show retinoids improve fine lines and skin thickness even in older skin. Start slowly and use a rich moisturiser to avoid irritation.

Why is my skin so dry after 50?

Falling oestrogen after menopause reduces oil, collagen and the skin's ability to hold water. Richer moisturisers with ceramides and glycerin help, along with gentler cleansing.
